From the Ground Up – EaW Deck Building, part 1

What with Empire at War’s release right around the corner and the influx of 160 new cards in to the Celestial Edition card pool, I figured it might be time to show our readers a little bit of insight in to how I go about building a deck for the new tournament environment. I’m . . . → Read More: From the Ground Up – EaW Deck Building, part 1

Between a Rock and Hard Place

Sorry for the hiatus everyone! GenCon has come and gone, and what has been traditionally been a lull for the competitive L5R scene has seen new life with the announcement of the Jeweled Championships, the Solving the Riddle Charity Tournaments, and a whole slew of Winner’s Choice events. But where do Crane decks fall . . . → Read More: Between a Rock and Hard Place

    Hitting the Sauce – Alcohol & L5R

I’m sure that with the on going Empire at War previews that are happening over the next week and the massive amount of buzz GenCon is generating, there will be more than a fair share of rants over the next fortnight, and while I generally try to avoid internet venting myself, there has been . . . → Read More: Hitting the Sauce – Alcohol & L5R

    Why Daidoji Inada ruins everything

Here is a riddle for you:

How is Daidoji Inada like Angelina Jolie?

The longer you have the both of them around, the more you realize they just ruin everything.

Daidoji Inada, one of Crane personalities from Death at Koten.  Being a big nerd, I spend a fair amount of time in the Crane . . . → Read More: Why Daidoji Inada ruins everything

Seawatched Wave Men – Crane Military

Honestly, when I first saw Seawatch (Candy) Castle, I was under whelmed. The trade off of switching from Shiro Daidoji and losing one Province Strength, PK as well as honor gain in trade for send home and an extra Favor gain didn’t amount to a hill of beans in this crazy game. Then I . . . → Read More: Seawatched Wave Men – Crane Military

Like the prior Candy Battle Honor there is a focus on everyone being able to do something, and after running into the nightmare that is Phoenix Dueling . . . → Read More: Art & Duels – Kakita Honor

    The Stat is Quo

There’s been a lot of talk about dueling since the release of TPW, mostly due to Seawatch (Candy) Castle, Shadow’s Talon and Impetuous Challenge. Between these three cards, it is once again exciting to challenge, focus, and strike. That said, the mechanics of dueling haven’t changed, if you can out focus your opponent, you . . . → Read More: The Stat is Quo

    Focused Effect

With the advent of Seawatch Castle the words “Focus Effect” have suddenly taken on a whole new importance for Crane players. An importance that I think some folks are putting above and beyond deck consistency and winning games.

As I mentioned in the “Everyone Duels” entry in older environments, most notably LE, it was . . . → Read More: Focused Effect

    Don’t Pick on Me!

Meta. The word often strikes fear in to the heart of Joe Average Player around the globe, often followed by rants of how Design hates whatever deck type is hampered by the meta. Honor meta in particular is very easy to identify and with the release of The Plague War, two new, powerful cards . . . → Read More: Don’t Pick on Me!

    Everyone Duels

Seawatch Castle (aka Candy) has changed the dueling game for Crane in several ways. The most obvious is always having a duel available. This availability of duels leads to people including both more duelists and more cards with focus effects. Now while legitimate choices they are not always the best choice even with Candy.
